| First picture I ever took that I liked. And still do. I started photography in 1968 after seeing Arnold Newman's portrait of Igor Stravinsky. Suddenly I realised this medium had a special quality. So it took two years of trying, I finally made a picture that worked. At that time, starting in photography meant learning to develop films, and make prints in the darkroom. That needs a lot of time and some determination. With a digital camera, I reckon, I could have made a good picture inside a year... less. The picture was made on a Sunday at Sydney's Domain where political and religious zealots came to make their point. Everyone else came for the fun of it, including lots of young people. The speakers disappeared at some point and all that was left a couple of years ago was sculptured ladder to commemorate the past. But last time I was there on a Sunday (2009) there were a few brave speakers trying to resurrect the tradition. Great for photographers. |
