Cameras, essential techniques. Knowing the
options to achieve photo goals. Before session
check-list. Exercise:
Chose two subject categories, shoot and make 5 prints
for review at next session.
Session 2: Cameras: planning,
preparation, accessories. Some useful techniques: self-timer, shutter
release, tripod. Lens types: zooming, wide angle/
telephoto. Workshop/picture review. Exercise: Using
aperture to control depth of field. Bring prints to next session.
Session 3:
Composition,
viewpoint and framing. Theories of picture construction, simple or
complex? Workshop/picture Review. Exercise: Shoot a
series of buildings with a theme. Bring 5 prints to
next session.
Session 4:
After the camera:
processing, presentation, winning an audience. Work flow: from camera
to archive to hanging. Workshop/picture Review. Exercise: Choose two
well-known photographers, select examples of their work, bring
to next session..
Session 5:
History through
photographers' eyes. Movements, impact of painting, black
& white/colour. Naming the big names.
Workshop/picture Review. Exercise
: Bring examples that show how photography is used/abused
today to next session.
Session 6:
(Location shoot): Street
/ night photography. Candid &informal portraiture.
Photographer etiquette, impact on our pictures.
Practise & use of long focal length lenses. Night photography
techniques. Exercise:
for next session, bring prints of pictures taken on shoots.
Session 7:
Photography & Computers:
PCs & image manipulation. Software review, scanning,
Internet resources. Workshop/ picture Review. Exercise: Shoot a
series of photographs of buildings with a theme. Print for next session.
Session 8:
Architecture
& cityscape (Location
shoot for day group): Tradition & technique; learning from
the work
of leading photographers. How to make buildings come alive &
interpret their human relationships. The
challenge of difficult angles & viewpoints. Exercise Day group:
Bring prints to next session. Exercise
Night group: photograph favourite buildings using the
methods

CITYSCAPE
The secret of successful
landscape/cityscape/seascapes is to chose the time of
day/season for drama. Use foreground to add scale.
Session 9:
Photographing people.
Formal & informal, street photography,
children, events. The
great photo portraitists, painting traditions, professional
trends. Workshop/picture Review.
Exercise:
Make a portrait – formal or informal. Bring prints
to next session.
Session 10:
Throwing more light on portraiture.
Using flash, fixed lighting, natural lighting. Choosing a style: eye
contact, smiling, backgrounds. The nude &
portraiture. Workshop/picture Review. Exercise: Make a
self portrait and bring prints to the next session
Session 11:
The Landscape:
Photographing the living environment including cityscapes,
seascapes, industry. History, traditions, colour or black
&
white. Use of zoom/special lenses. Panoramas. Workshop/ picture Review.
Exercise:
Make two prints to A4 from pictures made earlier in
courses. Bring prints to next studio session.
Session 12:
Landscape (Location),
cityscape and seascapes.: Shoot series using
techniques detailed in Landscape session. Bring prints to next
session. Exercise
(additional): photograph a familiar place at two different times of the
day or in different weather. Bring prints to next session.
Session 13:
Making a print
fit to hang. Chemical, digital, quality control.
Demonstration of digital printing potentials. Workshop/
picture Review. Exercise:
Photograph a group of people. Try to get at least five, could be
either formal or grab shot. Bring prints to
next
session. OR
Exercise:
Make close-up pictures of two familiar things or other favourite
subject from nature. Bring prints to next session.
Session 14:
Close up & nature
photography. (Location shoot for day group) Subjects, lenses,
lighting. Advantages of digital. Traditions in
nature
photography. Workshop/picture Review. Exercise:
Chose a favourite subject and make a series of photographs that use new
knowledge of processes/ traditions. Bring prints to next
session.
Session 15:
Movement
in still photography: blur and freeze; looking at the
options like
sports, action, performing arts, children and others
that
won't keep still. Exercise:
Select best course picture and print big. Mount or frame and
bring to final session.
Session 16:
Making it to a
higher level. Course review & assessment.
Individual & future directions. Exercise: Write a
plan to realise your goals in photography.
