Course participants. Cameras, pictures, essential techniques. Identifying hurdles to great photography.
Sharing photography via Internet

Using your camera: planning, accessories, key controls.
Location shoot :
Botanical Gardens,
Close up and nature photography

Subjects and lenses. Advantages of digital. Macro photography and lighting. Traditions in nature photography.

Project for next week: Using aperture to control depth of field.

Session 2
Sunday 12 February

(pm, night)

After the camera: processing, presentation, winning an audience. Work flow: from camera to archive to hanging.  Proofing/indexing, digital printing,  sizing, paper surfaces, permanence, Framing, Albums, workbooks.

Photography and computers: PCs & image manipulation. Software review, scanning, 
Picture review: Session 1 exercise, Nature photography shoot.

Workshop & picture review: 
Nature photography shoot from last week.

Location shoot:
Night photography
Practice and techniques, timing, blur, manual exposure. As well as exploring the potential of night photography, this session explores the camera control in practice.
Bring tripod, shutter release


Project for next week: Use the Internet or books to identify the greatest landscape photographers.

Session 3
Sunday 19 February

Composition:  Viewpoint and framing. Theories of picture construction; Simple or complex?  Composing with people.

Landscapes:  Techniques; History and traditions; use of zoom/special lenses.  Panoramas.

Workshop & picture review: 
night photography and look at the great landscape photographers.

Location shoot: Landscape, cityscape and seascapes
Afternoon session at Watson's Bay: ferry, bus or car.

Project for next week:
Use digital black & white settings (or film) to explore three of composition theories from this session.


Session 4
Sunday 26 February

History of the medium through photographers' eyes.
Technologies, movements, impact of art traditions, Black &  white or colour? Some of the big names in photography

Workshop & picture review:
Landscape photography and black & white project from last week.

Location shoot: 

Portraits (with model), Street & People photography. Working with people  to achieve an effective portrait. The questions of eye contact, smiling and backgrounds.
